Football star shot in the head joins team on field
News

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WUSA9) -- On Friday night when #22 stepped onto the field for Frederick Douglass High, nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

Turan Caudle walked out just like many other players, but with each step he was beating the odds.

When Caudle spoke with WUSA9 more than four months ago, he was a patient in the children's wing of MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital.

After being shot in the back of the head, Caudle was relearning everything - how to walk, how to talk - but on Friday that boy was hard to find.

Instead of sitting in a hospital, Caudle took the field as the captain for the defensive line. He didn't play, but this moment was one his family thought they would never see.

"We kept praying and praying and he's here on the field," Kimberly Gainer, Caudle's aunt, said. "This is just like very overwhelming. So emotional. So happy. Everything."

Caudle described it one word: "different."
