Top Geography Students To Test Skills At State Geographic Bee

On Friday, March 30, young geography whizzes across the United States and U.S. territories will participate in state-level Geographic Bees, competing for a spot in the national competition in Washington, D.C., in May. The Bee is organized by the National Geographic Society. The 2012 National Geographic Bee is sponsored by Google Inc.; at the state level, the Bee is also sponsored by Plum Creek.

Up to 100 fourth- to eighth-graders in each of the 50 states, District of Columbia, U.S. Atlantic and Pacific territories and Department of Defense Dependents Schools have qualified for the state Bees. Each state winner will receive $100, “The Complete National Geographic” on DVD and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for the national finals May 22-24 and the chance to be crowned National Geographic Bee champion.

The last day of school for students in Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) will be Friday, June 8. The last day for teachers will be Monday, June 11

Other employees scheduled to work a 10- or 11-month schedule should confirm their last day of work with their supervisor.

County Students Showcase Creative & Performing Talents

This information comes to us from Prince George's County Public Schools:  On March 27, more than 120 students are expected to participate in the theatre arts festival, which features workshops, a monologue competition and vendors. The evening performance will include winners of the monologue competition and student performers at 6:30 p.m.

The dance showcase will include all-day workshops and an evening performance. Students will participate in master classes of various genres including ballet, jazz, modern and African dance. The evening performance will feature the choreography of PGCPS dance instructors and students. 

Admission fees are as follows: $5 for children ages 5 and up, and $10 for adults at the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts.

The Maryland State Department of Education has bestowed awards on 

59 different public schools in Anne Arundel County for their achievement on 

the 2011 Maryland School Assessment (MSA) and High School Assessment 

(HSA) and for their improvement in performance among student groups 

between the 2010 and 2011 exams.

The following information was sent to us by Prince George's County Public Schools:

 

Prince George’s County Public Schools Superintendent William R. Hite, Board of Education Chair Verjeana M. Jacobs and County Executive Rushern L. Baker III, joined by community and state partners, will issue a proclamation celebrating National School Breakfast Week on Thursday, March 8 at Suitland Elementary School located at 4650 Homer Ave., Suitland. 

U.S. Department of Agriculture official Yvette Jackson and representatives from nonprofit Share Our Strength and the Partnership to End Childhood Hunger in Maryland will also speak during Thursday’s event.
